How’s Your Furnace Doing?

Your furnace averages out to 45% of American family’s energy bills so it is extremely important to take care of it and make sure it’s running as efficiently as it can.

We want to give you some tips and tricks on how you can maintain your furnace throughout the year, so you know you are receiving the best financial cost on your energy bills!

1. Make sure your vents are open

Let’s start with an easy one…

Check around and see if you have anything blocking your vents in your home. Make sure they are all open and adjusted to help the air flow freely through your home. This can make a huge difference if you have had something blocking a vent in a specific room!

2. Clean or replace your filter

Your filter has an important job to help move warm air through all in the rooms in your home. A furnace filter protects you from dust mites, pollen, bacteria, pet dander, etc. It removes these particles from the air before it reaches your equipment and is heated. This is especially important for those who suffer from asthma or allergies.

If you have a dirty filter, this will now allow your furnace to operate the best it can. Filter should be changed out from 30 to 90 days. If you have a nicer (more expensive) air filter, this can help you last a little longer than 3 months. This all depends on the shape of your furnace and how old it is. You can call us, Reed’s Plumbing, HVAC & Excavating, for a recommendation on the best air filter for your furnace.

3.Make sure blower motor is functioning correctly

A furnace blower motor’s job is exactly what it sounds like. It helps with air circulation by driving the fan that proves air movement for the furnace. Once the heating elements reach to the temperature you have set for your home, the blower motor kicks on and pushes that air through the heat exchanger. Most furnace blowers also provide the air for the air conditioning system too.

A great way to notice if you’re furnace blower has a problem is the sound of the noise that is coming out of it. If it’s extra noisy, this can tell you if there is an issue with the blower electric motor or with the blower wheel. If you happen to hear a high pitch sound, this can tell you that two metal surfaces are grinding against one another. Then, a loud humming can tell you that you might have an electrical issue.

If you have any issues with detecting what is wrong, call a trainer tech to help you with identifying what the issue is. It’s important to contact someone right away so this does not lead to any major issues.

4. Reduce home’s heating load

You might be feeling that you are losing major heating within your home and cannot figure out why. Any issues in your structural shell can be the issue. This allows for the cold air to come in while the warm air is leaking out. You can stop this by sealing up your home’s envelope, which help reduce the amount of heat needed to keep your home warm (and help save you some money). Call a HVAC professional to help you with this issue.

We hope these tips can help you through the cold temps and make your home cozy! If you have any questions, feel free to call us here at Reed’s Plumbing, HVAC & Excavating at (417) 831-6122 Our family and is here to serve yours!
