Furnace Problems We Can Diagnose

Heating problems do not always result in a complete system shutdown. Changes in airflow, sound, cycling, or temperature can signal that your furnace needs attention.

Contact us if you notice:

  • The furnace will not turn on

  • Cool air is coming from the vents

  • Some rooms remain colder than others

  • The system starts and stops frequently

  • Airflow has become weak

  • The furnace runs without reaching the thermostat setting

  • The blower operates continuously

  • The system makes banging, rattling, grinding, or squealing sounds

  • Heating costs have increased unexpectedly

  • The pilot light or ignition system is not working

  • The thermostat is unresponsive

  • Unusual odors appear when the furnace operates

We inspect the complete heating system instead of making assumptions based on a single symptom. This allows us to find the underlying issue and recommend the appropriate work.

Complete Furnace Repair Services

Modern furnaces rely on electrical, mechanical, airflow, and safety components working together. A problem with one part can affect the performance of the entire system.

Our furnace services include diagnosing and correcting problems involving:

  • Ignition systems

  • Burners and flame sensors

  • Blower motors

  • Capacitors

  • Limit switches

  • Control boards

  • Thermostats

  • Electrical connections

  • Safety controls

  • Airflow restrictions

  • Pilot light components

  • Furnace cycling

  • System shutdowns

  • Unusual furnace noises

We work with common residential gas and electric furnace configurations. Our technicians explain what failed, why it matters, and what is needed to restore safe, dependable operation.

Why Is My Furnace Not Heating?

A furnace may stop producing heat for several reasons. The thermostat may not be communicating with the system, the ignition components may have failed, or a safety control may have shut the furnace down. Restricted airflow can also cause overheating and repeated shutdowns.

Because several problems can produce similar symptoms, accurate diagnosis is important. Replacing a part without identifying the underlying cause may not restore proper operation.

Our technicians test the relevant components, evaluate system behavior, and trace the problem to its source before recommending work.

Furnace Short Cycling

Short cycling occurs when a furnace starts and stops before completing a normal heating cycle. This can make it difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature while placing additional strain on system components.

Potential causes include:

  • A dirty or restrictive air filter

  • Thermostat problems

  • Restricted airflow

  • An overheating furnace

  • Flame sensor issues

  • Incorrect equipment sizing

  • Electrical or control problems

We determine what is interrupting the heating cycle and explain the options for correcting it.

Weak or Uneven Airflow

If one room stays cold while another becomes too warm, the furnace may not be the only factor involved. Restricted filters, blower problems, ductwork conditions, closed vents, or system sizing can all affect heat distribution.

We evaluate airflow alongside furnace performance to determine whether the issue originates inside the equipment or elsewhere in the heating system. Our goal is to restore consistent heat rather than temporarily mask the symptom.

Furnace Noises and Odors

Furnaces make normal sounds when starting, running, and shutting down. Sudden or unusually loud noises deserve attention, particularly when accompanied by reduced heating performance.

Different sounds may suggest different concerns:

  • Banging or popping: Ignition delays or expanding ductwork

  • Rattling: Loose panels, hardware, or internal components

  • Squealing: Blower motor or moving-component problems

  • Grinding: Worn motor components

  • Repeated clicking: Ignition or electrical issues

  • Buzzing: Loose electrical connections or failing controls

A brief dusty smell can occur when a furnace starts for the first time in a season. Persistent burning, electrical, or fuel odors should not be ignored. Turn the system off and arrange for professional evaluation. If you suspect a gas leak, leave the home and contact your gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.

What to Expect During Furnace Repair

We make the service experience clear from the moment our technician arrives.

System Evaluation

We ask about the symptoms you have noticed and when they began. The technician then examines the furnace, thermostat, airflow, safety controls, and relevant system components.

Accurate Diagnosis

We test the system to identify the source of the problem. Once we know what is causing the malfunction, we explain our findings in straightforward terms.

Upfront Options

You receive recommended solutions and pricing before work begins. We answer your questions so you can make an informed decision about your heating system.

Professional Workmanship

After you approve the work, we complete the necessary service with careful attention to your equipment and home.

Final Testing

We run the furnace and verify startup, heating output, airflow, thermostat response, and system shutdown. Before leaving, we review the completed work and any relevant maintenance recommendations.

When Furnace Replacement May Make More Sense

Many furnace problems can be corrected. However, continuing to invest in an older or increasingly unreliable system is not always the most practical choice.

We may recommend considering replacement when:

  • The furnace is near the end of its expected service life

  • Major components have failed

  • Service needs are becoming more frequent

  • The equipment heats the home inconsistently

  • Energy costs continue to rise

  • The system no longer matches the needs of the home

  • The cost of restoring operation is substantial compared with replacing the equipment

We will explain the condition of your furnace and give you the information needed to compare your options. The final decision remains yours.

Help Prevent Future Furnace Problems

Routine maintenance can reduce wear, support efficient operation, and uncover developing issues before they interrupt your heat. During a furnace tune-up, we inspect important components, test safety controls, check airflow, and confirm proper system operation.

Homeowners who want ongoing maintenance can also ask about the Reed’s Protection Club. Membership includes routine care, automatic maintenance reminders, priority scheduling, and exclusive savings.

Amazing experience!!! Reed’s Plumbing has the process worked out so smoothly! We called at 8:00 am with an emergency, had a bid in hand with explanation from Josh by 9:30 am, and the team of plumbers (Drew and Sam) and excavator (Michael) and cleanup (Michael and Cash) were on the job by noon and finished the entire project before 6pm. The whole crew was great! Very professional and their obvious expertise made us feel at ease. They worked through the heat with a great attitude.
We thanked our neighbors for recommending Reed’s Plumbing and we will do the same!

Reed's Plumbing and Air provided fantastic service for me today. I had a water stream spraying all over the master bath counter, wall, and like a waterfall to the floor. A real mess!
A water faucet at the bathroom sink broke this morning with water spewing all over. I could not get the cutoff valve to turn, so I had a real mess. Stuck a needle nose screwdriver in the geyser of water and packed it to create a stream into the sink, and called Reed's. Drew H. arrived quickly and turned off the water. Then replaced the faucets and drain, and went above and beyond to recalk around the sink, and clean up all the mess. A very pleasant and knowledgeable young man. I really appreciated all he did to fix "my mess" so quickly and professionally. I definitely would call Reed's again, and would highly recommend their service. I really appreciated Drew H. answering all my questions.

When I called Reed's this morning, I was informed that they were doing free air conditioner checks. Thought I would take advantage of this service as well due to the extremely high temperatures we have been enduring and the way my AC had been running almost continually. Trey came out quickly, cleaned my AC and tested and found it was low on coolant. He replaced coolant, and the AC is working much more efficiently. This should help my utility bill as well as helping to keep the house cooler.

Thank you, Reed's! I appreciate all the help I received today. Blessings on Drew H. and Trey-they really helped this retired teacher.
